Things To Do
- Eat Lobster! Penobscot Bay boasts the best lobster fishing grounds in the country. Enjoy a fresh lobster dinner at our restaurant or at Brown’s Coal Wharf, a lobster roll at HJ Blake’s in the center of town, or ask us about arranging an evening lobster bake at the beach.

- Walk the quiet island beaches, visit Mullen’s Head Town Park and explore great hiking trails by the sea, or climb up Ames Knob for the best views of the island and the Fox Island thoroughfare. If you dare, take a swim in the refreshing ocean water at a local swimming hole.
- Take a long or short bike ride on North Haven’s 30 miles of smooth, quiet roads. Biking offers a perfect way to see the island, get some exercise and explore. We can also help you get to Vinalhaven for a day trip, where you can explore our neighboring island community by bike and take a dip in the warm freshwater quarries. And Nebo offers good quality mountain bikes for rent. Let us know if you want us to reserve you a bike for your stay.
- Bring your kayak and explore Penobscot Bay. There is nothing like paddling into the many small coves or sliding up onto a deserted beach on one of the many surrounding, uninhabited islands. Mill River, just across the North Haven Thorofare is a favorite spot for Maine kayakers.
- Go sailing – see the island on a peaceful sail with local captain Joel Rowland aboard the sailing vessel Tammy Norie. Or take a day trip on one of the local lobster boats for charter. A captain can take you and your family to an uninhabited island for a picnic, to Matinicus Rock to see the puffins, or to nearby island communities like Vinalhaven, Isle Au Haut or Matinicus. Bring a picnic lunch, hike around the island you are visiting, and then take a refreshing dip in the cool Maine water before you head home.
- Enjoy small town life and stop by coffee hour at Waterman’s Community Center, attend a community event, watch the ferry and fishing boats come and go, visit our local historical society museum, stop by the library or church (both are on the same lane as Nebo).
- Play a round of golf at our award-winning North Haven golf course. Nine holes with views of the ocean at almost every turn.
- Spend a morning in town visiting our local gift shops and galleries. Enjoy the Saturday Morning Farmer’s Market just a stone’s throw from Nebo. Then eat out at one of the local restaurants for lunch and dinner.
- Enjoy a nighttime event at the Waterman’s Community Center, like a movie, an engaging talk by a local artist, musical performance, poetry reading or theatrical production. Almost every night of the summer is busy at the community center and in winter there is almost a Saturday night movie and weekend event.
- Take some time to relax! Sleep in, feast on our incredible homemade breakfast, spend the day reading in the sun or by the fireplace, wind down in the afternoon with a cup of tea or a glass of wine on the porch, and enjoy the bright summer stars at night.
Especially For Kids: North Haven is a paradise for kids of all ages. It is one of the safest places on earth. Kids can ride their bikes all over the island, enjoy local playgrounds, explore rocky beaches and tide pools, or enjoy a variety of organized activities. There are summer sailing classes at a local yacht club for kids ages 8-16, with private lessons for students enrolled for less than two weeks. There are many regular classes, camps, and activities for kids in summer at Waterman’s Community Center, from Acting Camp to Creative Camp to Ping-Pong Tournaments to Teen Nights. Nebo is happy to help make your vacation with kids as easy as possible. Please call us let us help you plan a great island visit with your family.
