Island Events & Offerings

Waterman’s Community Center: With a theatre, meeting rooms, summer camps for kids, classes, and a coffee shop — has become a beehive of island activity. Nightly activities range from highly acclaimed, locally produced plays and concerts to movie nights to guest lectures/conversations from a wide range of speakers. Some of last year’s featured programs included writer and NPR reporter Tom Gjelten, rug and textile designer Angela Adams (who grew up on the island), naturalist talks, and poetry readings by New Yorker-turned-local writer Susan Minot. The musical performances range from Paul Winter to bluegrass music, chamber music to rock ‘n roll.

The North Haven Historical Society: open Tuesdays and by appointment, features a “general store” and a furnished kitchen and living room, as well as special exhibits of island boats and tools.

Restaurants: There are three restaurants open on North Haven in the summertime including Nebo Lodge, Brown’s Coal Wharf, and HJ Blake’s and there is one year-round grocery store.  The store has a good selection of picnic fare and some prepared foods, like pizza, available most days.  HJ Blake’s, right in town, offers prepared foods and great lunch fare in July and August.  And Nebo Lodge and Brown’s Coal Wharf are both open regularly for dinner.

On Saturday mornings, there is a farmer’s market just up the street from Nebo at the ball field. Locals get there early to purchase great local produce, home baked pies or fresh island-grown oysters. Lobsters are plentiful and can be purchased directly from the fishermen or at Brown’s Boatyard.

Other Events: The island is busy with activity every summer, with concerts and events and art shows and more.  July 4th weekend brings the annual town fun run, kids games, and community picnic, followed by the 4pm “Blessing of the Fishing Fleet.”   But the August Community Days is usually the peak of island activity, celebrated every summer (August 12 – 14, 2010) with special events, a parade on Saturday, dances and more.  In the spring and fall things slow down a bit, but there are still regular events from potlucks to Saturday night movies to keep life interesting.   On Labor Day Weekend Nebo will host the 3rd Annual North Haven Oyster Festival, a celebration of all things Oyster!

For those who are looking for something more low-key, there is always plenty of local gossip available at J.O. Brown’s boat boatyard or at the Community Center senior coffee hour to remind visitors what small town life feels like.
