July & August Barn Dinners
On July 16th and August 6th, we’ll be presenting an amazing feast prepared by Nebo Lodge at the Turner Farm barn celebrating the incredible island harvest. The dinners will begin with farm tours, and then we’ll sit down, family-style, in the barn for a dinner featuring farm-raised meats and vegetables and homemade cheeses from the Turner Farm. The prix fixe menu will be $75 per person. Seating is limited, so make your reservation early by calling 207-867-2007!

Equinox Dinner Trips – Tues & Thursdays!
Last summer’s Thursday night Nebo dinner trips were so successful that we are doing them again—and we’re adding Tuesday night to the schedule!  Every Tuesday and Thursday night in July and August, Equinox Island Transit —with licensed captain John Morin— will depart from Rockland at 4pm sharp. The cost is just $20 per person, round trip.  Once you reach the North Haven town dock, you can take a casual walk through town, enjoy drinks on our deck, then dinner in the dining room. The Equinox will leave for the mainland again by 8–8:30pm and you can enjoy a starlit trip across the bay. Call us at 207-867-2007 for details and reservations. Come try Nebo for yourself!  We’ve got some great spring weekend specials to help make it even easier to come enjoy Nebo’s wonderful food and accommodations. Come out for two weekend nights this spring and we’ll give you a dinner on us!*  You can spend the weekend feasting and then you can hike the beautiful island beaches and trails, rent one of our bikes and ride the quiet island roads, or just relax.

*Dinner includes one appetizer, main course and dessert per person.  Alcohol and gratuity not included.  Special runs until June 25th.  After that we’ll be running the same special when you stay two nights between Monday and Wednesday in the summer.

The farm sits on the edge of Penobscot Bay, overlooking Goose Rocks Light and the Fox Island Wind Turbines. Today it is a functioning, four-season organic farm with several acres of vegetables, a certified creamery, and goats, pigs, cows, and poultry for meat, eggs, and milk.

FARM WEEKENDS: For the weekend of June 24-26th and September 30 – October 2, we are hosting a very special Nebo farm weekend, packed with wonderful meals and hands-on farm demonstrations.

The weekend meals include a Friday night North Haven oyster tasting, a barn dinner, and a picnic on the beach at the Turner Farm, as well as homemade breakfasts at Nebo Lodge. You will also enjoy an extensive farm tour of a working island organic farm with fields of vegetables, cows, pigs, chickens and goats. You’ll take a goat cheese-making workshop, hear an active talk on organic farming and four-season growing featuring our year-round greenhouses, and you’ll take an island foraging walk. There will be lots of opportunities to ask questions and to get your hands dirty! See below for the full weekend schedule.

BARN DINNERS: As part of our Turner Farm partnership, we are also thrilled to host four Saturday night barn dinners at the farm in the summer and fall, celebrating the incredible island harvest. The dinners will begin with farm tours and cocktails, and then we’ll sit down, family-style, in the barn for a dinner featuring farm-raised meats and vegetables and homemade cheeses from the Turner Farm. The prix fixe menu—including wine—will be $75 per person*. Barn dinners will be held on Saturday nights – June 25th, July 16th, August 6th, and October 1st. Seating will be very limited, so make your reservation early by calling 207-867-2007!

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OF FARM WEEKEND EVENTS

Friday – Arrive on the middle boat (the hour-long ferry leaves Rockland at 2:15pm), get settled in your room at Nebo and then take a late-afternoon island tour. The tour will be followed by champagne cocktails, beer and wine with North Haven Oysters shucked by island oyster grower Adam Campbell at the beach, if the weather cooperates. Dinner follows at the Lodge.

Saturday – Enjoy a homemade breakfast at Nebo and a quick trip to our island farmers’ market. Next, we’ll travel to the Turner Farm for a full tour of the historic farm, including an extensive walking tour and overview of the farm history, our animals, and a discussion of four-season greenhouse rotation farming. There will be a casual picnic lunch on the beach followed by an afternoon of cheese making with Jamien Shields. You’ll make some fresh chevre using the farm’s own goat milk. Next, you’ll travel back to Nebo for some down time to shop in town, take a bike around the island, relax, and shower. At six, we’ll head back to the farm for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres of island-smoked seafood, homemade crackers and pickles. We’ll dine on grilled farm meats and veggies with fresh pesto, homemade bread and cheeses, and farm salads. We’ll finish off with homemade ice cream with berries and island-made elderflower syrup.

Sundays: Sunday starts with another leisurely breakfast at Nebo Lodge, followed by a 9am island foraging walk with David Hopkins. Check out is 11am and afternoon ferries leave at 12:30pm and 3:45pm (last ferry of the day).

The first Equinox supper run from Rockland to North Haven last Thursday night was a huge success!  The trips will continue every Thursday night through July and August, leaving Rockland at 5pm and returning by 10pm.  The cost is just $20 per person for the round-trip ride across the bay. Also, don’t miss our summer three-night special at the Nebo Lodge bed and breakfast. And now that we are open – it is time to enjoy summer with a night out at Nebo or a few days of restful vacation on the island of North Haven.   So a few new special things to help you enjoy Nebo!

1)   Our new bar dining area has allowed us to add a no-reservation section of the restaurant.  So walk-in and enjoy our new “lighter fare” menu or the full menu in this new cozy space.  This weekend’s sausage pizza and fish tacos were instant crowd pleasers.  The bar is stocked, as always, with creative cocktails.  This weekend featured fabulous rhubarb and basil drinks at the bar, as well a great beer and wine list.

2)   Summer Special — come stay for three nights and get a free dinner for two on us! 3)   Every Thursday in July and August we will do a round-trip Equinox run from Rockland to North Haven to help our mainland friends enjoy dinner on the island and still sleep in their own beds!  The boat will leave from Journey’s End Marina in Rockland at 5pm and it will arrive on North Haven by 5:45 with time to take the 3-minute walk up to Nebo, enjoy a drink on the deck, dinner, and then the boat will leave back for Rockland by 8:45pm. 4) Rides from Vinalhaven – if you are staying on Vinalhaven we’d be happy to pick you up at the Vinalhaven-side of the Thorofare at the town dock.  Just mention you need a ride from Vinalhaven!

So why should you come visit North Haven Island for dinner or an overnight bed and breakfast stay THIS SUMMER?

The island is blooming and green and absolutely beautiful. The beaches are quiet and warm. And the farms and gardens around the island are already producing wonderful greens and herbs faster than we can eat them – which bodes well for a good summer of eating on North Haven.

The Turner Farm, where Nebo gets much of our produce, is producing bumper crops of kale for our special Nebo crispy kale and lots of wonderful lettuce, chard, and radishes.  We are already looking forward to the baby bok choy next weekend and the peas and tomatoes that will come early this summer.  We are especially excited for the new Turner Farm chevre – soon to be gracing the Nebo menu – with the help of local cheese makers Jamien Shields and Jeff Dec (and their goats).  Three times a week the Turner Farm is offering farm-visiting hours.  While you are on island you can go see for yourself where so much of our wonderful food comes from!

Amanda and Amelia spent the winter perfecting some new treats for supper and dessert and the expanded menu has already showcased some their favorites.  Amanda’s new pizza topped with roasted leaks, fresh micro-greens, or local sausage has been an instant hit. I haven’t figured out whether it is the crust or the sauce or the cheese but something makes this pizza special. And Amelia has perfected the art of homemade ice cream and has added numerous new flavors and semifreddo’s to the menu. Last week’s favorite was the rhubarb ice cream. Come out and judge for yourself!

We believe our bed and breakfast experience will make your island stay, or your trip to coastal Maine, memorable. With tastefully outfitted rooms with a blend of original inn antiques and Angela Adams rugs, we have both a historical inn with modern touches that don’t fit the traditional bed and breakfast mold. And our homemade breakfast is always amazing with North Haven fresh eggs and bacon, seasonal fruits, and piping hot scones and muffins.

While the island of North Haven offers the kind of peace and solace you look for in a vacation, there is still plenty to do. The island roads are beautiful — ready for bikers and walkers (we have bikes for rent, too!).  The public beaches are great for exploring or launching your kayak and the island golf course is in full swing.   We are also excited to recommend Penobscot Passages – a new North Haven based sailboat service that can take guests for day or evening cruise aboard a beautiful boat with local captain Joel Rowland.

On Columbus Day Nebo wrapped up its fourth season for the inn, and third for the restaurant. It was a great year, with some good changes and improvements like the new deck and bar menu, which inspired us to do even more this winter! We have broken ground on an exciting renovation project which will, upon completion, winterize and expand the bar area, add much-needed handicap access, expand two rooms to include private baths, and improve our kitchen facilities and basement storage. Everyone is working very hard to complete this work by early spring, so keep an eye on Nebo News for more information about a grand re-opening, including an exciting artistic surprise in the small dining room!

Unfortunately this does probably mean the restaurant won’t be open at all this winter, and that even the few rooms we thought we might be able to rent are currently unavailable.
